Best Items to Donate to Your Local Animal Shelter

Running an animal shelter isn’t cheap, and without the help of donations and our volunteers, helping these animals wouldn’t be possible. You can help in many ways, and it doesn’t have to be limited to cash donations. If you’re looking to give back to your local animal shelter, here are some helpful ideas for contributing.

Pet Food

Dog food can be very costly, especially when there are many dogs to feed. The cost can be overwhelming, reaching well over $100,000 depending on the size of the shelter. Donating dog food can support these animals and help keep funds in the shelter for animals that require more extensive care. Before donating, always ensure to contact your local shelter to confirm that you are donating items and food that they need. Please donate higher-quality food to ensure these dogs receive the nutrition they need.

Heating Pads For Sick/Injured Animals

Heating pads are valuable donations because they are often used to keep new puppies and kittens comfortable during the first few days of their lives. They are also helpful for sick or injured animals that are unable to keep themselves warm. When selecting a heating pad, ensure that it can be microwaved rather than plugged into an outlet. This choice helps to regulate the temperature and prevents unnecessary wires from being near the animals.

Towels and Blanks

Towels, which are not typically considered for animal shelter donations, are actually used for various purposes and are vital for keeping the animals healthy and happy. Clean towels are essential for bathing, birthing, and grooming. Since these items need to be cleaned and replaced regularly, shelters always have a need for more. Additionally, blankets are helpful for keeping newborns warm after birth and for providing comfort to dogs in their kennels.

Gently Used Pet Carriers, Leashes, Collars and Bowels

If you have items from current or past pets that you don’t use anymore, these are great items to consider donating to your shelter. Dog bowls, carriers, and leashes are just a few items you might have lying around that the shelter could use.

Don’t Have the Money to Donate These Items

Helping to raise money alone with awareness can be just as helpful if you don’t have the means to help out financially or don’t have the time to volunteer. If you have a wedding, funeral, birthday, or other events, you can always ask for a donation to help out your local shelter. This also helps other people think about what they can do to help our animal friends and can raise much-needed money for these shelters that so desperately need it.
