Why does my mother always tell me to rake my lawn in early spring to get the best lawn?
The reason for raking your lawn in early spring is to remove excess thatch. If you don’t know what thatch is don’t worry about it because we didn’t either. Thatch is simply the decaying plant material that accumulates on the ground. If the layer of thatch is large enough it can block the sunlight from the grass and it can also prevent water from reaching the deep roots. Many lawn care specialists will tell you that if the thatch is more than an inch think it will be a problem. Removing thatch is important in both fall and spring (something to share with my mother) if you want to give your grass plants the best chance for survival during the winter months as well as the summer months.
So get out there and start raking or simply call a lawn care specialist and have them do the heavy work!
